The Blue Catfish is native to the Escambia and Yellow Rivers in northwest Florida. Its range has increased, and is now prevalent in most areas of the Gulf Coast, including Lake Okeechobee. Although different from the Channel Catfish, it is closely related. Crossbreeding between the two species does occur resulting in hybridized species.
Ictalurus comes from the Greek word meaning “fish cat” and Furcatus comes from the Latin, meaning “Forked.” Blue Catfish prefer clear, swifter running water than other species of Catfish. They prefer a water temperature of 77-82° F.
Blue Catfish spawn in late spring. After fertilization, eggs hatch within about 1 week. The male guards the young for about a week before leaving them on their own. Blue Catfish enjoy a diet of crayfish, mussels and other small fish.
This variety of Catfish can live 20-25 years. Most of then that are caught are in the 20-40# range; however it is not uncommon to catch one that weighs over 100#. It is rumored that in the 1800’s, a Blue Catfish was caught in the Mississippi river that weighed over 350#.
Blue Catfish are excellent eating. They have a very delicate flavor. Of course, there is nothing better than fried catfish with hushpuppies and tartar sauce. Catfish can make a very elegant center of the plate presentation as well.
