This diadromous (swims from fresh to salt water) fish is found from eastern Africa, throughout Southeast Asia, as far north as Japan, but mainly in northern Australia, where it is a popular sport fish, as well as an important commercial fish. They are generally caught in the wild using lines.
Although Barramundi can reach lengths of over 6 feet and weigh as much as 130#, more commonly, they weigh 11-13#.
Barramundi eat crustaceans, mollusks and other small fish, including small Barramundi.
This fish is hermaphroditic, maturing as males after 3 to 4 years. Usually, after the first spawning season, which takes place in brackish waters, the fish turns into a female, at the age of 5.
Other common names for Barramundi include: Giant Perch, Giant Sea Perch and Asian Seabass.
In recent years, Barramundi has become very important to aquaculture. In Australia, it is one of the most prized and most expensive fish. Other countries that are raising the fish in farms include: India, Indonesia, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.
