This freshwater fish is the largest member of the sunfish family. Black Bass refer to large and small mouth bass.
Black Bass are native to the southeastern United States, however, they are now widely distributed throughout the world (cosmopolitan distribution), due to the introduction by humans.
Black Bass enjoy water that is 65 - 85° F. They will live in water as deep as 20 feet. The average size for a Black Bass is about 16-24”, however some large mouth bass will grow as large as 36”. The world record is a 22 lb., 4 oz. fish that was caught in Montgomery Lake, Georgia in 1932. Females are always larger than males.
Adult Black Bass eat fish, crayfish, crabs, frogs, salamanders, snakes, mice, turtles and even birds.
These fish spawn from December through May. The males build the nests, which are generally 20-30” in diameter. After the female lays the eggs, and the eggs have been fertilized, the male guards the nest until the babies (fry) are ready to leave.
This variety of Bass is the most important sport fish in the United States.
