These soft shell clams are harvested from sandy and gravel bottom shallow bays by “raking” them. They can grow as large as 5 ½. Although supplies are limited, they are available most of the year.
Their shells have prominent ribs, which are often worn smooth. They can live up to 16 years. They are able to “jump” away from predators by using their foot.
