The Snowy Grouper, also commonly known as the “Brownie” is named for the white spots that are geometrically placed on their bodies.
This tropical species of Grouper lives in very deep water (400-800 feet). They are often found on ship wrecks and other reefs. They are prevalent in The Gulf of Mexico all the way south to Brazil. Specimens have been found as far north as Massachusetts, however, they are usually killed by November when the water temperature drops to the point where they can not tolerate it.
Snowy Grouper can grow up to about 4 feet in length, and weigh as much as 50#. They are highly territorial, and very cannibalistic. In captivity, they can not be in a tank with any fish of equal or lesser size, as they will kill and devour them. They will eat any fish up to their own size, but especially like deep water crabs and butterfish.
Snowy Grouper grow quite quickly. Juveniles can grow over a foot in a matter of several months.
