Wreck Grouper

Polyprion americanus

 

Wreck Grouper have a very wide distribution, and can be found in many parts of the world. They tend to prefer water that is fairly cold. They live at depths from between 120-1800 feet. They range in size from 4 ½ feet to 5 feet, and can reach well over 100#.

 

As their name suggests, they live near ship wrecks, or in underwater caves. They can often be found near the surface of the water under floating debris.

 

Wreck Grouper feed on large Crustaceans. They spawn in the spring.
