Green Lip Mussels are native to New Zealand, and have been harvested for food since man first inhabited the islands. Although this species can be found throughout New Zealand, they are most prevalent in the temperate waters off of Marlborough Sound and Golden Bay, which are at the northern tip of the southern island.
It is interesting to note that there is really more interest in this species of Mussel as a source for Arthritis medication, than as a food source. With the help of the Japanese, cultured Green Lip Mussels got their start in 1971.
For years, scientist noticed that the Maori people, native to the coastal areas of New Zealand had virtually no cases of arthritis in comparison to the people living further inland. During their research, they found that a major component of the Maoris diet were Green Lip Mussels. After studying the Mussels, it was found that these Mussels naturally contain a high concentration of glucopolysacchorides. Also present were 2, fatty 3 omega acids; eicosatetraenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (try saying those once slowly!). To make a long story short, 1 company figured out how to stabilize the acids, and make an arthritis medication under the trademark name of Lyprinol.
Ok, since this is a culinary site, back to food! Most Green lip Mussels are sold frozen, on the half shell. They are great for buffets, as they are a large mussel, and as the name suggests, younger mussels have a beautiful bright green lip around the edge of the Mussel.
