Although this species of Mussel is the same that is farm raised in southern France, Spain, Italy and Greece, these Mussels are farm raised Domestically.
The Mediterranean Mussel was first discovered in The Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1989. It is a mystery how or when they became introduced in the United States.
Today, they do occur naturally along the Pacific Coast, however commercially, they are farm raised. Mussel farmers attach mussels to either rope or netting and allow them to grow. They take very little care, as they eat what they filter naturally through the water.
The Mediterranean Mussel is particularly large in size. They are generally 2 ½ - 3” in length, or about 25 per pound. They are excellent for stuffing, or serving on the half shell.
