The Wianno (Pronounced we-a’-no), are from the small town of Wianno on Cape Cod. The town is on the south shore, and named for an Indian chief of the Mattacheese Tribe.
Although these oysters are common along the Eastern United States, the most sought after specimens come from the waters of Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound. It is the environment where they are raised that gives them their distinctive sweet, bring “wellfleet” flavor that oyster lovers crave.
Scientists and Oystermen have worked in concert to develop an oyster with a deeper cup, resulting in larger oysters. These oysters are available year round, and spawn during the months of June and July.
