Sheepshead

Archosargus probatocephalus

The Sheepshead is a member of the Sparidae family, and closely related to the Porgy and the Seabream. There are roughly 120 species of this family world wide.

The Archosargus probatocephalus is divided into 3 sub species: A.P. probatocephalus, which have a range between Canada and Cedar Key, A.P.Ouliceps, which have a range between St. Marks Florida to the Bay of Campeche, Mexico, and A.P. Aries, which range from Belize to Brazil.

Other common names include: Convict Fish (because of its distinctive black and white stripes, Sheephead, Sheepshead Bream and the Southern Sheep.

Sheepshead reside inshore over rocky pilings, jetties, mangrove roots, piers and in tidal creeks, where they tolerate brackish water quite well. During late winter to springs, they move off shore to spawn.

On the large side, Sheepshead can reach lengths of up to 30” and weigh as much as 22#. Commonly they are caught in the 1-8# range, or about 14-18”. They can live up to 20 years. The Florida record is 12#, 2 oz.

Sheepshead are omnivorous. Their stout teeth allow them to crack open shellfish, including barnacles. They also feed on undersea vegetation. Although Sheepshead are an important commercial fish, most are a by catch, caught by trawlers. There are however, a few fishermen that fish exclusively for Sheepshead.
