The Atlantic Lane Snapper has other common names including: Lane Snapper, Candy Striper and Rainbow Snapper.
Atlantic Lane Snapper habitat of choice is shallow, grassy bottoms that are close to the shore, however, they also can be found in rocky outcroppings, shipwrecks, as well as in mangroves. They have even been reported at depths of 1300 feet.
Predators include sharks, other large fish, as well as other species of snapper.
The Atlantic Lane Snapper has a rather large range. They live in water that ranges anywhere from 60.9° - 84° F. They can be found in the Atlantic Ocean as far north as North Carolina, over to Bermuda, throughout the Gulf of Mexico, all through the Caribbean and as far south as Brazil.
Lane Snappers feed nocturnally on small fish, shrimp, cephalopods, gastropods and crabs. They usually weigh under a pound, and range in length from 14” – 20”. Their life expectancy is about 10 years although some have been observed in the northern Gulf of Mexico that live up to 17 years. Lane Snappers spend their entire lives in one area.
Although spawning times vary according to location, Lane Snappers spawn in the spring and summer months. To spawn, they go into the open ocean where their eggs are released, floating to the surface where they are carried by the ocean currents and the wind. The eggs hatch within 23 hours after fertilization. These fish reach sexual maturity at around 1 year of age, when they are about 3-9” in length.
The Atlantic Lane Snapper has far more importance as a sport fish than as a commercially harvested fish. 316,730 pounds of Lane Snapper were harvested in Florida waters in the year 2003. Of that total, only 10% were caught commercially, mostly in Monroe County ( Florida Keys). These fish are more frequently caught in the Gulf of Mexico, rather than in the Atlantic Ocean. Lane Snappers are caught commercially mainly because they live in the same areas where shrimp live and as a result are caught by shrimp trawlers.
Atlantic Lane Snapper is excellent for frying whole, grilling, roasting & sautéing.
