Very little is know about this species of snapper, as it lives offshore in rocky ledges in very deep water.

Although the range is similar to many of the other members of the snapper family, it is found primarily in South Florida, the Bahamas, and throughout the Caribbean, where it is a very important commercial fish.  Commercially, they are mainly harvested using handlines.

Yellow Eye Snapper have many common names including Silk Snapper, West Indian Snapper, Day Snapper and Longfin Snapper.  They are commonly confused with Red Snapper, however, as their common name suggests, they have a yellow eye.

Yellow Eye Snapper are among the smaller snapper species, usually never reaching over 5 pounds.  The maximum length is about 2 1/2 feet.
