Triggerfish

Family Balistidae

6 species of triggerfish are native to Florida, out of the 40 species world wide. These are the kind of fish that you think about when you dream of going scuba diving or snorkeling. They are very brilliantly colored.

They get their name from a defense mechanism. When an angler hooks a triggerfish, they dart into a cave or crevice in the reef. They have a ball and socket structure on the second spine of their dorsal fin that wraps around the first spine of the dorsal fin, causing it to become erect (which is how they get their name). They are then able to depress their pelvic bone which allows the fish to become tightly lodged in its hiding place. Their mouths are very strong, and generally win the fight over the angler.

All triggerfish have small mouths in relationship to the size of their bodies. The scales of triggerfish have been modified into a type of armor.

Triggerfish are solitary, diurnal fish that feed upon crustaceans. They have a stout set of teeth that allow them to easily chomp through shells. Their eyes are located on top of their heads, and rotate independently of each other. In most species the males guard the eggs that are laid in a nest built in a sandy depression. Some species become very aggressive toward divers during mating season.
