Albacore Tuna is one of five species of tuna that is harvested for food, and is one of the smallest. On average they are about 2 ½’ long and weigh 20-45#. Although they can be found in most parts of the world, 67% is caught in the Pacific Ocean. They account for about 7% of the total tuna catch (about 200,000 tons per year).
Albacore Tuna has a life span of about 5 years. The major consumers are The United States, Canada, Japan and Spain. Their white meat has given it the nickname “chicken of the sea.”
Albacore Tuna is high in omega 3 fatty acids, which help the human body to fight heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, cancer, arthritis, lupus along with other diseases.
Albacore is mainly harvested by pole and line, trawling and longlines. They swim in the open ocean, far away from land. This species of tuna does have a higher concentration of mercury than other species.
