Big Eye Tuna

Thunnus obesus

Big Eye Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna are both referred to as Ahi in Hawaii. They are very similar, although, Big Eye Tuna have a higher fat content because they swim in very deep, cold water. They swim at greater depths than any of the other Tuna species.

Commercially, they are caught by seining and longlining. They represent about 8% of the total Tuna catch. Average Big Eye Tuna are about 3’ in length, and weight about 30-50#. Although they do have world wide distribution, the major areas where they are caught are Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Spain and Italy. Big Eye Tuna have a life span of about 5-7 years.

Due to their fatty flesh, they are mainly bought by the Japanese for making sashimi. It is said that older Big Eye Tuna have a flavor that is reminiscent of beef.
