Yellowfin Tuna

Thunnus albacares

 

Yellowfin Tuna has a world-wide distribution from 45° N to 40° S, however, they are not found in the Mediterranean Sea. Of all Tuna species, the Yellowfin are second in popularity, and volume. Yellowfin are very fast swimmers and can migrate long distances. They will school with other species of fish that are similar in size. They eat a diet of fish, crustaceans and squid. They average in size anywhere from 1’-6’ and usually weigh 15-30#. One specimen that was caught was 94” long, and weighed 440#. They have a life expectancy of 4-7 years.

 

The major areas where Yellowfin are caught include: Thailand, The Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Spain and Italy. The countries that consume the most Yellowfin are The United States, Japan and the Countries in Western Europe.
